Lesson from John 21:15-22

Scriptures: John 21:15-22, 14:15, 1 Pet 5:2-4, Isaiah 6:1-8, 2, Cor 3:2-3 ,Rom 12:2, Titus 3:5, Matt 11:29, Col 3:10-12, Luke 24:27,32

I. Do you love me more than these?

1. Jesus asked Peter three times – acknowledge our weakness, receive grace and mercy from God.
2. Philo vs agape – hierarchy of love
3. Degree of service:

a. Feed My little lambs – care for and feed with word and doctrine the young of the flock, children and young converts.
b. Lead My sheep – direct and guide the Church as a whole.
c. Feed My sheep – give them spiritual nourishment fitted for them or providing matured Christians with finest of wheat.

II. Follow Me.

1. Dr. Calvin Ray Evans “It’s possible to follow the Lord and not love the Lord, it’s impossible to love the Lord and not follow Him.”
2. We can’t only be used by God after we were worked upon by the Holy Spirit.
3. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after the Lord can’t be His disciple.

III. Lord, what about this man?

1. Focus on following Christ – see nothing of John
2. Every man should bear his own burden.
3. Exercise charity rather than curiosity – Peter vs Paul
4. “O blessed Lord, give us Thy grace to enable us to obey Thy command! Teach us to look within, to busy ourselves with ourselves, to be severe on ourselves, gentle and charitable to others, to follow Thee too steadfastly and too intently to have time to turn about, or inclination for unprofitable questions as to our brethren. “Follow thou Me”—and whither now goeth our Lord? Indeed when He spoke to Peter He was about to pass to the right hand of God; but He had just before told this disciple that he must have fellowship with Him in His sufferings. Oh! let this truth be remembered by all: we must follow Thee, O Lord, to Thy cross, if ever we would follow Thee, O Lord, to Thy crown”. — Henry Melvill.

IV. The world itself could not contain the books what would be written.

1. Scripture will continue to reveal Jesus through the working of the Holy Spirit. (Luke 24:27,32)
2. Believers are letter from Christ written with the Spirit of the living God. (2 Cor 3:2-3)
