John 13:18-38

 

I. One of you will betray me. (v18-30)

1. Jesus knows whom He has chosen. (John 6:71, John 15:16, Matt 26:50)

2. Scripture must be fulfilled. (Psalms 41:9)

3. They may believe that “I am He” (v19)

4. Whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. (v 20, Mat 10:40)

5. Jesus was troubled in Spirit and testified, “Truly truly, one of you will betray me.”

II. A New Commandment (v31-35)

1. Jesus tells of the chain, He is glorified, God will glorify in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and glorify Him at once. (v31-32)

2. Jesus calls his disciples, “Little children” saying that they can’t go with Him where He is going. (v33)

3. Jesus gives them a new commandment, that they love one another just as He loves them. By this all will know that they are His disciples. (v34-35)

III. Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial (v36-38)

1. Jesus answered Peter, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward. (Matt 16:18)

2. Peter pledges to lay his life for the Lord.

3. Jesus foretells that Peter will deny Him three times.

IV. Conclusion:

1. Contrast between Judas and Peter

2. What’s a new commandment of loving one another?
