The Breaking of Bread

Bible Passages: I Cor 10:16-22, 11:23-32, Matt 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20

I. Introduction:

1. Passover came about when the Jews celebrated the feast in commemoration of their deliverance from slavery. (Ex 12:1-14, Lev 23:4-6)

2. The Supper Instituted by our Lord – night before His dead. (Matt 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20, I Cor 11:23-32)

II. Supper is a family meal, excludes thought of work. (rest)

III. Key elements of Breaking of Bread (1 Cor 11:23-32)

1. Remembering the Lord – He is condescending. – We’re very forgetful so the Lord wants us to remember Him and to remember what He has done for us. And this is an expression of His love. Sheep has the tendencies to forget. – Early Church treasured the Breaking of Bread (Acts 2:41-43,46)

2. The bread – the body of Christ – proclaims His death- Christ’s body was broken for us.

a. Jesus gave His life for us. No one could take it.

b. Scourged (Isaiah 50:6, 52:14, Mark 15:15, Matt 57:26)

3. The cup – the blood of the covenant – proclaims His death.

4. Until He returns.

5. Partake the Breaking of bread in a worthy manner.

6. Examine ourselves prior to partaking.

IV. Breaking of Bread opens our spiritual eyes – Road to Emmaus. (Luke 24:13-35)
